Itchy scalp can be embarrassing, uncomfortable and frustrating because it’s not always easy to determine the cause. It can happen to all of us. Not only is itchy scalp uncomfortable, but it’s also a sign of poor hygiene and makes one’s appearance suffer. It can lead to dry, flaky skin falling off the scalp when you scratch it, something no one should be doing in public.
Many commercial products claim to be perfect for our hair needs but these chemical-filled solutions do harm our hair in long run. Instead, it is better to look for something natural.
To relieve your itchy scalp, you can either purchase an over the counter remedies, or go to the more natural remedies for itchy scalp which promotes hair growth, doesn’t harm your hair, removes dandruff, and promote healthy scalp condition.
Causes of Itchy Scalp
- When the hair (especially oily hair) is not washed frequently enough causes itching.
- Dry scalp skin lacking the protective oil layer is vulnerable to infections and easily gets irritated.
- Stress is a common cause of itch. Scalp, face, and neck are often affected.
- Dandruff is the number one cause of an itchy scalp caused by the fungus infection.
- Use of chemical-filled commercial products.
- Head Lice causes an itch on the scalp.
1. Tea Tree Oil for itchy scalp
- 5 drops of tea tree essential oil
- 1/2 cup brewed green tea
- 4 oz spray bottle
Mix tea tree oil with strong brewed, antioxidant-packed green tea and apply to the scalp through spraying. Keep it for overnight or rinse hair after 40 minutes. Repeat it for 2-3 times in a week.
Green tea helps exfoliate the scalp to get rid of dandruff and related itchiness of scalp. Due to the abundance of antioxidants, green tea is considered extremely beneficial for the hair. It helps in increasing the hair thickness and lowering the hair loss and also add shine to hairs.
Tea tree oil has proven good for the healthy scalp. It removes the dryness and dandruff from the scalp. You can treat dandruff, promote hair growth with essential oils also. It increases the blood flow to the hair follicles and strengthens the roots and checks hair loss.
Alternatively, mix few drops of tea tree oil to your shampoo and wash your hair after massaging 5 minutes.
Or, dilute 5-7 drops of tea tree oil with 2 tablespoons of any vegetable oil or with 1 tablespoon of water and apply to the scalp. Keep it for overnight for the fast result or rinse it after 30 minutes. Use only herbal shampoo to wash your hair.
2. Cumin seeds for itchy scalp
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil
- 2 tablespoon cumin paste
- 2 tablespoon yogurt
Soak cumin seed in 3-4 tablespoon of water for 30 minutes. The make a paste of soaked cumin seeds and the water left in the container. You can add more water to make a smooth paste. Now, mix oil and yogurt and apply to scalp. Keep it for 30 minutes and rinse it off with herbal shampoo. Repeat 2-3 times a week.
Cumin is high in vitamin C and it has anti-fungal properties. Deficiency of vitamin C can possibly cause your skin to become dry, scaly or rough. Cumin also helps in protecting your scalp from the attacks of bacteria, fungus, and other microbial infections. It also treats dandruff, lice and heals scalp boils, scalp pimples, scalp eczema, scalp psoriasis and other disorders of the skin.
Yogurt and coconut oil will moisture and sooth the dry and itchy scalp. Cumin can be one of the remedies for itchy scalp which is effective and show the fast result.
Alternatively, boil 2 tablespoons of cumin seeds in 1/2 cup of water and apply it to your scalp and hair. Rinse it after 30 minutes. Repeat it for 2-3 times a week.
3. The regular wash of Combs & Brushes
- Maintaining good personal hygiene is very important in addition to avoiding sharing combs and brushes. Always clean your brushes & combs every day. Dirty hair utensils are bad for the scalp, as they can plug hair follicles and spread bacteria.
- Start washing your brushes and combs regularly in plain soap and lukewarm (not hot) water. Go for natural bristles in your brushes, not plastic. Why does that matter? Because the static plastic tends to attract all manner of particles, and retain greasy, sticky, toxic stuff you don’t want! Regular wash off the combs and brushes is the first remedies for an itchy scalp to start with.
4. Avoid using In-organic shampoo & conditioner
- Most of us have a favorite shampoo. We’ve shopped around and found one that smells right and leaves our hair soft, full, tamed, shiny, and the like. However, we probably don’t know what’s in our preferred hair-care product because reading a shampoo label is like reading a foreign language. Don’t use the product containing alcohol. - There are certain shampoos, conditioners, and styling agents that will cause your scalp to become itchy. 5. Aloe Vera Gel for itchy scalp
- 2 tablespoon castor oil
- 2-3 tablespoon aloe vera gel
Mix both the ingredients and apply it to the scalp. Rinse it off with herbal shampoo after 30-40 minutes. Repeat 3 times a week.
Vitamin A present in aloe vera helps to produce healthy sebum, an oily substance secreted by the scalp, which keeps hair and scalp from drying out and breaking off. In addition, Vitamin A fights free radicals that weigh your hair down.

6. Olive Oil Hair Massage for itchy scalp
- 1-2 tablespoon olive oil
- 1/4 teaspoon vitamin e oil
Apply this olive oil twice a week and leave it for 30 minutes or for overnight for fast result. Do shampoo next day.

7. Regular Hair Wash

If your hair is thick or coarse and you go a very long time without washing, the dirt and scalp grease can start to bunch together over time, leading to a texture chunky. Brushing will get more difficult and that leads to hair breakage.
- Be sure to wash your hair every two days, especially if you’re sweating or using lots of products to prevent excessive dryness and dandruff.
8. Avoid using Hair Styling Product
- If your hairspray or gel claim All-day strong-hold, they’re actually making your locks harder to hold on to. These are usually high in alcohol, which makes scalp and hair dry and brittle. Once you comb or brush your hair, that residue causes the hair to break and fall out and frequent use makes scalp to itch.
- Use of hot styling product like hair dryer damage the proteins that make up your healthy scalp and hair and its protective cuticle. Once the cuticle is damaged, the moisture balance is disrupted and your hair is more prone to breakage and your scalp gets dry and it can lead to an itchy scalp. Limit your hot tool usage—even your blowdryer—to twice a week, and start with the coolest setting possible.
9. Warm Coconut Oil Massage
- 1-2 tablespoon virgin coconut oil
To use coconut oil for itchy scalp, warm a bit of coconut oil and massage it into the scalp. Leave it for overnight or rinse it off after 30 minutes. Give a gentle massage of 5-10 minutes to your scalp. It will take away dry scalp and will add shine and luster to your locks. Repeat it for 2-3 times a week. Oil massage is one of the easiest remedies for the itchy scalp to do.

10. Egg Mask for itchy scalp
- 1-2 tablespoon castor oil
- 2 eggs
- 3 tablespoon yogurt
Mix egg, oil, and yogurt. Make a partition of your hair with your hand and apply the mixture to the scalp and hairs. Gently massage the scalp with your fingertips. Massage is essential as it improves blood circulation in your scalp area. Once you have applied the hair mask, wear a shower cap and let the mixture dry out. Let it sit for 30-40 minutes. The mixture will turn sticky on drying. Rinse it out with normal water and herbal shampoo. Apply the egg mask to get relief from itchy scalp twice a week.

11. Lemon for itchy scalp
- Vitamin C of lemon helps fight the bacteria on the scalp. It wards off dandruff and helps to get rid of the follicles’ debris and encourages the growth of new hair and produce healthy sebum i.e skin oil. It also helps with dry and itchy scalps because of its antiviral properties. It is also an essential nutrient for damaged hair and thus, treats and prevents a variety of hair disorders which can damage the hair follicles and affect the normal growth of hair.
- Apply lemon juice all over your scalp with the cotton ball. Leave it on for 5 to 10 minutes and then rinse with water.
12. Apple Cider Vinegar for itchy scalp
- half apple cider vinegar
- half water
- spray bottle
Mix the apple cider vinegar with water and spay it tour scalp and hair. Massage this mixture on the scalp to cure the itching considerably. Do this 2-3 times a week.
Apple has potassium which is one of the reasons why many people suffer from dry skin is due to the deficiency of potassium. Potassium keeps the scalp moisturized and hydrated internally.
The Malic acid of apple works as an exfoliant, helping to rid the skin of dead skin cells and also act as an astringent. It has antibacterial and antifungal properties and also rebalances the pH of the scalp.
