Best Carrier Oil For Acne With High Linoleic Acid

Essential Oil For Acne

Role Of Linoleic Acid For Acne

Acne-prone skin, especially oily acne-prone skin, is deficient in an essential fatty acid called linoleic acid.

You can usually see the composition of oils on the label. What you see are different fatty acids – the building blocks of oils, and linoleic acid (an omega-6 fatty acid) is one of them.

Linoleic acid makes an oil lighter and drier, so it sinks into your skin and doesn’t leave a greasy residue, usually after 20 min of applying when it is fully absorbed.

Linoleic acid is a vital component of sebum, the oil your skin produces that coats your skin. This deficiency indirectly clogs your pores and leads to acne and breakouts. Bringing back the extra linoleic acid to your skin is very healing and will also help to prevent future breakouts and acne.

Deficiency usually occurs when too much sebum is produced, resulting in oily skin, and the sebum producing cells in your skin produce this extra sebum with oleic acid instead (diluting the linoleic acid content).

When the pores are clogged, excess sebum keeps building up, creating a plug in your pore. Due to the absence of oxygen, clogged pores are a perfect environment for bacterial growth (acne bacteria P.acnes is anaerobic), which leads to inflammation.

Researchers have found a reduction in comedones (which develop from clogged pores) by 25% in just one month of applying linoleic acid topically. Now imagine what happens when you continue using high-linoleic acid oils for several months!

But where do we find linoleic acid oils?

Linoleic acid is naturally found in plant-based oils in high concentrations

Linoleic acid creates a lighter and thinner consistency, nourishing and protecting without being too heavy. Oils rich in this fatty acid can restore skin barrier function, reduce scaling on the skin, and are better suited to acne-prone skin types. Since linoleic rich oils are lighter in consistency, they’re my preferred carrier oils for daytime facial application especially (e.g. day serum).

Note: High linoleic acid oils = Healthy Acne Prone skin
